Winter Car Care in Mississauga: How to Protect Your Car from Road Salt and Rust

Every winter, Mississauga roads get a heavy coat of salt and brine. It keeps traffic moving, but it also sticks to your car’s paint, wheel wells, and underbody, where it quietly works on the metal until spring. A little preparation in late fall, plus a few habits through the winter, can keep that salt from turning into rust spots and repaint bills.

Why road salt is so hard on your car

Salt mixed with melting snow makes a wet, corrosive film. Wherever your paint is already broken, from a stone chip on the hood to a scratch on a door edge, that moisture reaches bare metal and rust can start. The places that suffer most are the ones you rarely see: rocker panels, the bottoms of doors, wheel arches, and the underbody.

Before the first snow: a fall checklist

  • Fix chips and scratches now. A small chip is easy to repair in October. After a winter of salt it can become a rust bubble that needs bodywork. Our scratch repair service seals damaged paint before the salt gets in.
  • Wash and wax. A clean car with a fresh coat of wax or sealant gives salt and slush less to grip.
  • Look underneath. Check the wheel wells and rocker panels for existing rust or flaking undercoating, and have it treated before winter.
  • Swap in winter floor mats. Rubber mats keep salty slush off the carpet, where it can soak through to the floor pan.

During winter: wash often, and wash underneath

The most useful habit is simple: rinse the salt off regularly, especially after a storm or a stretch of slushy driving. Choose a car wash with an underbody spray so the brine is flushed out of the places that rust first. On milder days, when temperatures rise above freezing, a wash dries properly and does the most good.

A few more winter habits help:

  • Use a soft snow brush, not a shovel or a hard scraper, to clear the body. Scratches made in January are an open door for salt.
  • Leave more space behind trucks and plows to cut down on stone chips from sand and gravel.
  • Wipe salt residue from door edges and the bottoms of doors when you notice it.

Warning signs of salt damage

Check your car over every few weeks, and again in spring. Get it looked at if you see:

  • Bubbling or blistering paint, often around wheel arches or along the bottom of doors
  • Orange or brown spots inside chips and scratches
  • Dull, chalky patches where salt film has sat on the paint
  • Flaking metal or undercoating on rocker panels and the underbody

Surface rust caught early can usually be sanded, primed, and repainted in one area. Left alone, it spreads under the paint and can eat through the panel. Our vehicle paint services cover both spot repairs and full panel refinishing.

Protecting your paint all year

Salt is the biggest winter threat, but sun, rain, and temperature swings wear on paint the rest of the year. For tips on waxing, ceramic coating, and paint protection film, see our guide to protecting your car’s paint from the weather.
